Game Review Quake

Introduction - What is the game about?

The game “quake” is a first play shooting game which enables a user to choose between “single” and “multiple players”. The game was created around the year of 1966. The aim of the game is to kill the creatures that try to kill the user to stop you from completing the different level as well as collecting trophies s they go along.

Story:

Personally I think that the stop of the game was set in an approach that isn’t too complicated for the user to understand. For example the way the game started easy and slow not just throwing them in the middle of the battlefield straight away. By starting them of slow enable the user to get the concept of the game for the to take in what is happening and understand what they are meant to be doing in the game  although the game offers instruction they are often skipped. I like the way the story had been set out the game consist of 28 different challenges. Which the user had to find the gate to the next level which i easily understood after finishing the first level.

Gameplay:

The games started of quite simple to allow the user the get the hang of things before it got more difficult. I thought this was extremely beneficial as most people usually always skip the instruction and like to try it out and learn new things as the go on. General I like the way that gave the user an option to use the mouse or the keyboard as some people are more comfortable with the mouse compare to the keyboard. This allowed the user to shoot from a variety of angles and distances. There are two gameplays that consist within quake; single and multiple players. With the single player the aims of the games is to find hidden passages ,collected as many useful objects as they can as well as destroying the obstacles what get In the way of completing the mission as fast as possible. The multiple player has the same aims however it is done while working together.

Graphics:

Personally I think the graphics used in quake are quite poor. For playing the game I found it quite hard to differentiate the celling from the ground. I think the graphics could be better as some of the aims of the game are to find hidden passages which is quite difficult to do with poor quality images.  For instance when I entered the water the screen went really dark, fuzzy and blurry it could have had a more water effect or even having a different colour on the water.

Sound:

I think that the sounds that are used in the games are good as they are fit for purpose. For example when the user goes into the water the splashes the game makes goes really well making it more realistic. Another example of good use of sound is when reloading a gun with bullets. A lot games sometimes miss out the sound of reloading a gun which is one of the most obvious things to have in a shooting game. I thought that the sounds used in quake came across extremely effective.

Conclusion:

Overall I really like the structure and setting of the game. I liked the way the designer stuck to a typical cliché story of a shooting game but added a little twist. Although there are little flaws like the graphics however the other aspect within the game such as the sounding and story make up for little flaws. Another weakness within the game is that it uses boring and dull colours. I think that the designer could have brighter colours and a more attention grabbing background.
