Game Review - Limbo

Introduction- what is it about?

Limbo is a single player game was released in the early year of 2010.   It is an LIMBO is a 2D puzzle-platform video game.

Story:

The aim of the game was clearly stated from the start. The aim of the game is for the user to guide an unnamed boy through hazardous environments. The user has to figure out different ways to get pass obstacles before they are able to continue searcher for the unnamed boy’s missing sister. The game has been designed in a method that predicts that the user will fail each obstacle at least once before they manage to get across it. Some interrupted that the game is used to teach people a lesson that sometimes no matter how many times you fail you just have to keep trying.

Gameplay:

With the game play the user has control over the unnamed boy. As the user has full control over the boy the user can then decide the direction they want to move the boy in. the user can is also  able to make the unnamed boy  push and pull obstacles in any direction of their choice.   The dark theme within the game is used to hide the obstacle as the user go along. The more obstacles the user successful passes the closer the user can get to find the sister of the unnamed boy. There are various of obstacles the unnamed boy can come across such as a spiders, bear trap, hole in the ground or even drown.

Graphics:

I actually think the way the graphics in Limbo is presented has been structured extremely well. The game goes for a spooky and haunted theme. For that purpose the game uses dark and ghostly background. I like the fact that the game uses a spooky theme but also manages to keep the background clear for the user playing the game to see what going on.  This can be quite difficult to have together but I thought the approach they used to make it work together was very creative. The graphic is presented in a way which set the scene for the user and allows them to understand the story of the game.

Sound:

I didn’t like the minority of the sounds used in the game.  I actually ended up muting the sound after a few minute of playing the game because I found it quite annoying. I understood that the designer was trying to go with a sound that compliments theme however I thought that the graphic that had been used already do so and by add the same style of sound it just made things too much. I think that more adventurous sounds could have been use than the creeper sound as it just made me switch of after a while. However I surprisingly did like a few of the sound that have been used, for example the player the user fell into the trap the snap sound of the closing deadly bear traps.

Conclusion:

Personally I thought that the game as a whole was good but however I do feel that there are lots of area that need improving. For instance the sounds I also think that the story could have been structure differently to understand the purpose of the game. For example maybe showing a quick scene right before the game starts of the sister being capture or something along those line. When I started play I started of excited as I faced some obstacle but after a while I got bored because of the dull theme that displayed on the screen.
