Limbo Review

Introduction:

Limbo is a video game which was released in 2010. The game is 2D and is deliberately designed to fail the player before they find the correct solution. It uses black and white tones and effects to make it look like a horror game. This game is very different to other puzzle games which make this unique.

Story:

The story of the game is that the unnamed boy searches for his missing sister through various dangerous challenges. The story of the game is set out that the player fails the task before passing it. The game was created very simply so that the player would have to learn the game itself without any help. The game story also was set out so that the players learns it himself and discovers what the story behind this game was.

Gameplay:

Limbo is set out to look as a haunted environment with a boy running through carrying out different challenges. The player controls the boy throughout the whole game. The boy could jump, pull objects and climb ropes. All these activities help the boy reach to its goal and complete all it levels. There is also another point of the game having a dark background as it hides hazards and monsters. There is no limit of the player dying in this game as once you die you will start from the last encountered checkpoint. There are also many traps in the second half of the game that the player has to be careful of however some of them could be avoided.

Graphics:

The graphics used in this game is to create a haunted pitch. This is why they use dark and grey colours so that the player finds it haunting and scary. The graphics go well with the game as it creates a death pitch. There is also shadows used which also go well with the story of the game. Overall the game uses high quality graphics as everything works well with the game.

Sound:

The sound used in the game goes with the game as it gives a dull atmosphere also the sound effects change when the boy carries out different tasks. The sound makes the player feel that they are in the game as it gives that atmosphere that they are the actual boy. The sound overall is very good as it changes in various tasks.

Conclusion:

I think that limbo is a good game and has a simple story behind it. Even though the game is simple and dulls it still has a meaning behind it. The colours used in the game are not eye catching however create a good atmosphere as they work well with the meaning of the story. The game could be improved by adding different choice characters and more levels. The game could also have different challenges.

Summary:

Overall I think that the game is very good and that the graphics and the sound work well with the game however the game could have more to the story than just the game of having a boy finding his missing sister. However on the whole this game is a good puzzle game and very unique to other games.
